A Grasshopper Kit.

After the “York” had won a competition, the owners of the Baltimore & Ohio Rail Road Co. ordered eighteen further locomotives from the manufacturer Grillingham & Winans. Because of the strange appearance of the vertical boiler, vertical cylinders and silt formed push rods the locomotive acquired the nickname “Grasshopper.” On 24th August 1835 a Grasshopper locomotive hauled the first train to Washington. Under the name Columbus 1836 the company G & W built a Grasshopper for the Leipzig-Dresdener Eisenbahn, the first locomotive that was exported from America to Germany.
