Introduction to 3" Scale
Road Locomotives. |
|
In the 3" scale
range
of models there are two main designs, the Aveling & Porter Road Tractor and
the Lorry. The tractor is available in road engine form and as a showmans'
engine with fairground fittings, dynamo, extended with twisted brass
supports. These models are powerful, large and impressive, being just over
one quarter full
size. 'The lorry which is available
only on special order, is a fully self-contained model which requires no
trailer, the cab back being removable to give access to the controls.
The tractor however is driven from a riding car or trailer and is
capable of pulling several trailers fully laden, it is even powerful enough
to pull a medium sized car. The trailer can a/so be used with the lorry to
give extra seating capacity.
There are many common components in the two engines with only detail
differences in the boiler, cylinder and gearing. The boiler is of silver
soldered copper construction and is fully tested prior to despatch.
The gun metal (bronze) cylinder set includes; cylinder, piston, steam chest,
valve, top chest, regulator, glands etc. The cylinder drives a counter
balanced crankshaft running in two substantial gun metal bearings with the
cast iron flywheel on one side and the two speed gearing on the other.
Full Stephensons link valve gear is fitted, as
on the prototypes, to give control of forward, reverse and steam saving
notch up positions on the reversing lever.
The tractor is fitted with an all gear drive to
the large decorative cast rear wheels that are such a feature of this
engine. To the rear of the boiler is fitted the tender carrying the water,
coal and brake gear. In addition, a belly tank is fitted under the boiler to
give extra water capacity for extended running between fill ups.
Similarly with other engines in the Maxitrak ra nge,
the fully machined kit means just that, all items are machined and require
light hand finishing, fitting and assembly only.
Painted kits require careful
fitting as some holes have to be drilled after painting. Ready to run
engines are fully tested and ready for action! |
